From metaphysics to psychophysics and statistics

by Borg (see, e.g., Borg 1978; also Borg et al. 1987). Invariant relations have been found between heart rate, blood lactate and ratings (R) of perceived (P) exertion (E) according to the "RPEscale" (probably one of the most commonly used psychophysical methods, with several hundred studies performed in the last few years and approximately one million people exposed to it every year), and the "CR-scale' (category scale with ratio properties, Borg 1982). For interpersonal comparisons a "rating scale" may be superior to a "ratio scale"! Guilford (1936) provides a good review of rating scales (with an example from descriptions of weather in 1805 reported by Titchener). He did not make the same mistake as Stevens and most psychophysicists, including Fechner notable exceptions are Parducci (1984), Heller and the Wiirzburg group (see, e.g., Heller 1990), Borg (1962), and a few others. Guilford understood the importance of "descriptive terms" and "landmarks." He concludes that the rating methods "have overshadowed the applications of all the other evaluative methods based upon personal judgements" (p. 263). But he also points out how "indispensable" these methods are to theoretical psychology. I definitely agree with him, but would also like to stress the importance of using the best properties of the ratio scaling methods for general, relative intensity evaluations, together with the best properties of the category-rating methods for level determinations and interindividual comparisons. This use of "meaningless" numbers with "meaningful" linguistic terms will improve the possibilities of understanding human communication and the problems of intersubjectivity.

Quantum Curiosities of Psychophysics
I survey some of the connections between the metaphysics of the relation between mind and matter, and quantum theory’s measurement problem. After discussing the metaphysics, especially the correct formulation of physicalism, I argue that two state-reduction approaches to quantum theory’s measurement problem hold some surprises for philosophers’ discussions of physicalism. Though both approaches...
متن کاملThe Influence of Ibn Sìnå on Gadr ad-Dìn Qinawì and His Followers
This article is an investigation into the nature of the Sufi metaphysics of Gadr ad-Dìn Qinawì and his followers. In contrast to previous scholars, who have considered Qinawì to be dismissive of philosophy in a way similar to Ghazålì, the author shows that in fact philosophical metaphysics, and in particular the formulations of Ibn Sìnå, had a great impact on Qinawì and his followers in the sch...
متن کاملOn Critical Representation in Brain Theory, Part II: Analysis
This is the concluding paper in my series [Wells (2011c, d)] on the metaphysical problem of knowledge representation. Its objective is the statement of the general problem to be solved in order to develop mathematical solutions for mind-body knowledge representation. With such a problem definition, the transition from metaphysics to empirical science proper is made. The task of formulating spec...
متن کاملA Glance at Psychophysics Software Programs
Visual stimulation with precise control of stimulus has transformed the field of psychophysics since the introduction of personal computers. Luminance and chromatic features of stimulus, timing, and position of the stimulus are the main features that could be defined using programs written specifically for psychophysical experiments. In this manuscript, software used for the psychophysical expe...
متن کاملWilliam James, Gustav Fechner, and Early Psychophysics
American psychologist and philosopher William James devoted the entirety of his career to exploring the nature of volition, as expressed by such phenomena as will, attention, and belief. As part of that endeavor, James's unorthodox scientific pursuits, from his experiments with nitrous oxide and hallucinogenic drugs to his investigation of spiritualist mediums, represent his attempt to address ...
